Rating:  ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Synopsis:

Hannah is twenty-eight when the worst happens.

Her first instinct? To call her mum.

The problem is, her mum having an accident, being rushed to hospital and never waking up was the worst thing.

Realising that she is now the Woman of the Family, Hannah has to be the rock for her emotionally-repressed father and chaotic younger sister, all while trying to muddle her way through the crucial life lessons her mother never taught her, like:

- How to ride a tandem
- How to react when your dad starts making lasagne for an unknown woman
- How to broker peace between feuding aunts
- How to know if you really want a baby or if this is just the grief talking

But what Hannah really wishes her mother had taught her is: when you've just lost the person who made sense of everything, how are you meant to find yourself?

Review:

The title, synopsis and cover had me hooked from the get go as it is so cleverly done. It is true, whenever I need help or even ill I will always call my mum. But grief and the aftermath of dealing with it especially the loss of someone who you lean on is something on a completely different level.

I really liked Hannahs character and she was the protagonist in the book, and was a relatable character, hilarious at the best of times and you can almost touch the grief she is going through. Hannahs boyfriend played a pivotal role in her life during this bereavement stage and was her rock and someone to help her through some dark times.  We also get to meet Laura, Hannah's sister and the dynamics in their relationship and how they deal with grief.

Hannah's father who you think is cold, but he is grieving the loss of his wife and dealing with it in his own way. It was heartwarming to read how it actually does try with the family as I felt sorry for him and didn't want him to be isolated. It was a tough subject matter but the author managed to inject some humour into it and it developed into love and loss and moving forwards which was so important.

I liked the way the chapters were designed and titled as they were chapters in Hannahs life and milestones she was trying to manage without her precious mother  being a part of it. It was an eye opener about grief and how everyone deals with it so differently. The author did well to encompass the 5 stages of grief cycle.

Although some parts were heartbreaking to read it was very well written and heartwarming.
