Review 💭💬:
This is my first read from Hilary and I wasn’t left disappointed. I was intrigued by this book and wanted to see how the characters play out and how the story will develop. So let me tell you what I thought.
Ah Connie McCabe, who on the outside appears to have the idyllic and perfect life. She works as a travel manager and has the luxury of traveling around Europe and her husband Devan is a GP. Devan has now retried and wishfully wants Connie to do the same however there appears to be a breakdown in their relationship. As much as Devan wants her to retire he shows no love towards Connie and she almost feels unloved and abandoned.
On one of her travels to the gorgeous setting of Lake Como we get to meet Jared who doesn't shy away from telling Connie how he feels. This is the slippery slope Connie goes down as she risks her marriage for a younger man, although she doesn't have all the facts about him.
Devan; you are either going to like him or not. I was the latter. He had many opportunities to show a bit of love to his wife however he left it too late before he came to his sense and I couldn't sympathise with him (Harsh, I know!).
It was well played out, how Connie travels around Europe and Jared is continuing to follow her. It brings that suspenseful and eerie atmosphere to the book and also the terrifying element of stalking. Jared character development was a bit lost I feel, he played such a pivotal role in the story but we don't really get learn what his motivation really was, what made him carry out his action and what he thought. Maybe there will be another book that will explore Jared life and the decision he has come to make?? It would make an interesting read.
We do get to meet other characters along the way, but there wasn't much character development for them, which I didn't mind as it didn't take away from the story.
It is a slow burner but I think this allowed for the emotions of characters and the atmosphere to build up, rather than it being rushed and having lots of plots. I did like how the aftermath wasn't rushed and you could feel the despair.
A brilliant read and I would definitely recommend you go buy a copy!!
