Synopsis:
When eminent psychiatrist Dr. Liz Sullivan is found dead in her bed, suspicion falls on local gamer and YouTube celebrity Jaden Dodds. Did he target her because of her anti-gaming views and the work she undertook to expose the dangers of playing online games? And what was her connection with Valiant, an independent game manufacturer about to hit the big time, and its volatile boss? Constance Lamb and Judith Burton team up once again, this time to defend a client who the police are convinced is guilty of murder. But just because he makes a living killing people on screen it does not mean he'd do it in real life. Or does it?
Review:
I am so happy to be joining another blog tour for Abi Silver in the collection of Burton and Lamb thrillers. Here is the link to The Rapunzel act: https://laugherandthunderstorms.blogspot.com/2021/04/the-rapunzel-act-blog-tour.html.
We get to meet Jayden Dodd or as everyone else knowns him JD. JD is an online gamer on YouTube platform with his friend Nathaniel. We also learn about Dr Elizabeth Sullivan who is a psychiatrist and researching in anti gaming, its affects and the changing policy. One day JD finds himself being arrested for the murder of Dr Sullivan as his DNA is all over her home. It comes to light that the pair didn't have a purely professional relationship. We learn more about gaming companies who have the exact opposite response to Dr Sullivan and want gaming to become a recognised sport.
Like the previous book, this one also is split into 2 halves. First part surrounds itself in the arrest of JD and Burton and Lamb making head way with the investigation and the second part the evidence and investigation is explored further and deeper and this is where you start questioning parts and making your assumptions.
The chemistry and relationship with Judith Burton and Constance Lamb is still brilliant. I love how you can visualise how they both bring forth different elements and perspectives that help build the jigsaw puzzle.
I did like how the perspective of the story was told from JD and the gaming company which was something different and I felt it worked really well. I think if you have very strong feelings you can be less empathetic towards certain characters but I thought it was a good approach. Also I was a bit apprehensive about court room drama but after the last book I've really enjoyed it.
The best part was you kept invested throughout because there sure are lots of red herrings and I was like 'No I thought I had solved it" so I couldn't put it down until I knew who actually did commit the murder.
I really enjoy how the author picks a topic that you haven't fully explored or even thought about and it changes your perspective to it
