Blurb

What happens when your darkest secret is exposed?

London, 1939. Winnie Berry has been the landlady of the Battersea Tavern for nearly twenty-five years, and the pub is like home to her - a place of tears and laughter, full of customers that feel like family. A place where she's learned to avoid the quick fists of her husband, and where she's raised her beloved son, David.

He's inherited his father's lazy streak and can't seem to hold down a job, but when war is declared Winnie is determined to keep her son safe. She's still haunted by the choice she made years ago as a desperate young woman, and she won't make the same mistake of letting her family be taken from her...

But when a young woman crosses her path, the secrets of Winnie's past threaten to turn her world upside down. There's nothing stronger than a mother's love - but can it ever have a second chance?

My Thoughts

This isn't my normal read but something about it I was drawn to and I am so glad I did pick it up and it definitely pulled at my heart strings.

I feel Winnies character was well versed and developed. At times you wanted to shout and go why but also taking in to consideration the building blocks of her life.  A strong women trying to hold it together but having to go through so much. She cared so much for people, always listening and nurturing.

David on the other hand, one minute he did make me chuckle, the next not so much! But I think this is where the author did a fantastic job to bring this type of emotion out from a character.  He really does know how to take advantage of Winnie and uses his looks to get through his day.

I really liked Rachel, who helps Winnie and has a few stories to tell too. Her family dynamics put her in horrible and embarrassing  situation and you really start to feel for her.

We meet a few other characters and learn more about the community and what lengths people will go to but also the softness some people will have.

The book  really took me by surprise with lots of secrets you start to unturn as the story progresses.
