Blurb

First published in New Zealand, this bestselling poetry collection charts the author's response to grief and loss after the death of her father to suicide.

Armed with her own limited dictionary, Elizabeth wrote poems that are by turns mournful, angry, and searching.

The cumulative effect is surprising in its narrative drive and cathartic power.

Poetry New Zealand Yearbook 2021 said Elizabeth “writes with utter confidence, a master of craft and insight.”

My Thoughts

I don't normally gravitate towards poetry books but this interested me and it seemed powerful.

A short read but its read in a very cathartic manner and at some points it is heart wrenching. It made me cry in some parts and you could feel the pain and sorrow of the author and it was pure.

I really liked how the poems where organised and structured as a play. It become so much easier to read and follow through rather than just being stand alone poems. It also showed the journey of emotions in the different acts and stages which  stood out for me.

Grief is a personal journey but also can be a shared experience and this book reflects that.
Not an easy read by any means but  drips in very expressive and complex in literacy words.
