Freckles- Blog Tour
Allegra Bird’s arms are scattered with freckles, a gift from her beloved father. But despite her nickname, Freckles has never been able to join all the dots. So when a stranger tells her that everyone is the average of the five people they spend the most time with, it opens up something deep inside.
The trouble is, Freckles doesn’t know if she has five people. And if not, what does that say about her? She’s left her unconventional father and her friends behind for a bold new life in Dublin, but she’s still an outsider.
Now, in a quest to understand, she must find not one but five people who shape her – and who will determine her future.
Told in Allegra’s vivid, original voice, moving from modern Dublin to the fierce Atlantic coast, this is an unforgettable story of human connection, of friendship, and of growing into your own skin.
My Thoughts
When I got my place on this tour, you would not believe how happy I was. I absolutely love Cecelia Aherns books and she is my favourite author. When I was going through a tough time a few years back I picked up her book and just immersed myself into them and they became my comfort read.
We meet 23 year old Allegra Bird who is now working as a parking warden in Dublin. She had a dream to become a Gardai but then gets rejected and turns her career into a warden. But in doing so she leaves her friends and family behind on the Atlantic coast. She never got to know her mother who left when she was a baby.
She appears to have the same routine most days, she has moved and now living above a gym, has the same lunch and visits the same bakery with her favourite order. Whilst at work Allegra keeps having to give a ticket to the same car for nearly 2 weeks and that turn out to be a YouTube celebrity Tristan and unleashes hell on poor Allegra and the statement that rocks Allegra that suggests you are the average of the five people you spend time with. I can feel the anger build for Allegra a small part for the aggression displayed by Tristan or when he called her a loser, but most of all it being a statement where she might have thought about it, but it is like someone has gone inside her mind and picked up her worst fear It sends Allegra in a whirlpool of thoughts and emotions. Who actually is in her circle apart from her father and why is her circle so small? and what can she do change and she must.
I adored Allegras character and related to her in so many ways especially with having a small circle, the vulnerability, the feeling of loss. She lands herself in some sticky situations and I was almost shouting at the book because you don't want her to do it. I enjoyed going on her quest to find these five people only for the realization that they are right there. It made me reflect on similar situations and Allegra has this missing/empty feeling sometimes that can get so overwhelming that she will fill it with meaningless people and tasks but until she looks closer it might already be there. It got deeper into how we connect to people and friendships good and bad. Also the realisation that not what you always want will be yours.
The author did a grand job with craving such a quirky, complex and relatable character. Some characters you will love some and some not so much but again beautifully crafted that they each hold their own identity and relate to the story really well.
This will be such a good bookclub read choice as you can have so many discussion points and it will curate different types of view points. It is a real emotional rollercoaster of a read but I just loved it, incase you didn't guess already!! And we can just take a moment to appreciate how stunning the actual book is 😍
