Blurb

It’s 1903, and Britain is desperate for change, but widespread calls for social and gender reform flounder against entrenched misogyny. Navigating this world are best friends Lena Hageby and Eliza Blackwood – two thoroughly modern young women determined to live life on their own terms. Rumours abound of barbaric experiments taking place within London’s medical schools, and when the women covertly witness a shockingly brutal procedure performed on a semi-conscious dog, they resolve to take down the perpetrator – renowned physiologist Dr William Bayling. In their fight for justice, the women are drawn into an increasingly vicious ‘David and Goliath’ battle with an all-powerful medical establishment who will stop at nothing to protect the status quo. But how much are the women prepared to risk? Their friendship, their loves, their freedom, even their lives?

My Thoughts

This was an interesting read for sure. I was really drawn into the blurb as it seems to cover so many topics all in one inciting book and was intrigued to see how it plan out.

We get to meet Leena and Eliza, two very strong characters who are passionate to speak out against the crimes against the barbaric animal testing that is happening in the name of medicine and science. They start off by simply debating and raising their worriers to it being a full scale campaign.

What really pulled me into the book was to make their voices heard more and to gain more evidence they go undercover as males. This was so fascinating and added an extra layer to the story which I have seen in movies but dont think I have ever read in a book before.

We get to read about more characters who help and hinder the progress and a court case takes place and it highlights further political and societal concerns and pressures.

There is so much to take in with this book. At times it is a very grim read so you do have to bare with it, because it holds such a powerful message about; making challenges, friendship, love and human emotions on a deeper and powerful level. On reflection it still resonates to today and highlights the changes yet that need to be made.

Brilliant book and a must read.
