Lucy Barton is a successful writer living in New York, navigating the second half of her life as a recent widow and parent to two adult daughters. A surprise encounter leads her to reconnect with William, her first husband - and longtime, on-again-off-again friend and confidante. Recalling their college years, the birth of their daughters, the painful dissolution of their marriage, and the lives they built with other people, Strout weaves a portrait, stunning in its subtlety, of a tender, complex, decades-long partnership.

My Thoughts

This was a perfect read as a stand alone. I haven't read the 2 previous books but it has made me reach out to them and add them on to my list. This is a short read but very impactful and packs a punch.

There is so much intricacy to Lucy and we get to learn about her thoughts and feelings. I really liked the introspection style of writing as it adds such a depth and closeness to the character.  Lucy Barton is now 63 but we learn more her relationship with William. William is a scientist and was Lucy first husband  with whom they have two daughter with Becka and Chrissy.  Even though they separated they are very much supportive of each other, with having coparented their children and moving on with future parents and children.  Caroline makes an appearance as she is Williams mother and he learns some family secrets that he just can't lay to rest, so Lucy helps him in to process the information and find out more. Whilst on the trip to Maine they  reminisce about past and present events.

I received this book several months ago but I've revisited several quotes/sentence as are powerful. The author really captures emotions in this book like no other, we get to read about multigenerational characters, family dynamics, trauma, grief, loss, loneliness, friendship and marriage. beautifully written human flaws that resonate to real life situations and that feeling of being lost but found.

This is definitely a must read. Out now,  so get yourself a beautiful copy :)
