Blurb
Alabama, 1947.
War's over, cherry-print dresses, parking above the city lights, swing dancing.
Beautiful, seventeen-year-old Violet lives in a perfect world.
Everybody loves her.
In 2012, she's still beautiful, charming, and surrounded by admirers.
Veronica "Ronni" Johnson, licensed practical nurse and aspiring writer, meets the captivating Violet in the assisted living facility where Violet requires no assistance, just lots of male attention. When she dies, she leaves Ronni a very generous bequest―only if Ronni completes a book about her life within one year. As she's drawn into the world of young Violet, Ronni is mesmerized by life in a simpler time. It's an irresistible journey filled with revelations, some of them about men Ronni knew as octogenarians at Fairfield Springs.
Struggling, insecure, flailing at the keyboard, Ronni juggles her patients, a new boyfriend, and a Samsonite factory of emotional baggage as she tries to craft a manuscript before her deadline.
But then the secrets start to emerge, some of them in person.
And they don't stop.
Everything changes.
My Thoughts
A wonderful romance with a twist, intrigue and well written book that hits the spot. The blurb provides enough information for the premise of the book.
Ronnie works as a nurse in a upmarket care home and shares some special moments with one resident named Ronnie. Ronnie and Violet and shared a lovely friendship and you can tell the really had a bond. Although Violet would tell Ronnie lots of stories about her life, she was very much drip feeding her the information more so for the end goal.
Ronnie lived almost a mundane life and is plodding her way through. When Violet dies, Ronnie is distraught but Violet has left her a bigger challenge to accomplish. Violet leaves Ronnie inheritance money but only if she will write a book about Violets life but the clause is she has to do it within the year. As Ronnie and Violet shared this friendship and she was immersed in-the stories, she doesn't want Violets money but to help her accomplish her final dream even though she isn't here any more. Although Ronnie is determined to write the book she now has to juggle her personal life, work, boyfriend and her inner demons and challenges.
The care home is the perfect setting and we get to read about some hilarious and quirky characters that just sets the tone and will make you laugh.
The story unfolds in two view points, of past and present. But it is so much more than that as we learn more about Violet and some dark times she went through and Ronnies upbringing and past. We get a notion of who these women have become today following the tribulations of their past. We don't get to just learn about Violet but join Ronnie on her journey and moving forward. Some parts you sense Ronnie journey super-seeds Violet but they both intertwine beautifully.
I really enjoyed this book and think it would be perfect for a book club read. Sweet but emotional all rolled in one.
