Kingfisher Lodge, nestled in a canyon on a mile and a half of the most pristine river water on the planet, is known by locals as 'Billionaire's Mile.' Sandwiched between barbed wire and a meadow with a sign that reads 'Don't Get Shot,'
The Colorado resort boasts boutique fishing at its finest and a respite for wealthy clients.
Now, it also promises a second chance for Jack, a return to normalcy after a young life filled with loss. When he is assigned to guide a well-known singer, his only job is to rig her line, carry her gear and steer her to the best trout he can find.
But then a human scream pierces the night, and Jack soon realizes that this idyllic fishing lodge may be merely a cover for a far more sinister operation.

My Thoughts

A well paced book that lets you absorb in the plot. I was worried it be very fast in details and pace but it wasn't so I really enjoyed it. This is a sequel but I haven't read the previous one but I think The Guide was fine to read as a standalone.

Jack is an Ivy league student, very prestigious education, however due to some harrowing events and his life takes a different turn he decides a change is a must. He still carries guilt and remembers his friend Wynn and even though he is working alongside his father you can tell you has some PTSD from previous events. So what better way to move forward then try to reconnect with mother nature and he takes up being a tour guide for trout fishing in a tucked away but luxury lodge of The Kingfisher Resort. What could possibly go wrong?

From the get go Jack and as a reader you can sense that something isn't right, there is a eerie sense just lurking. There are more surveillance cameras than you think there would be. Yes it is a luxury resort but even so. Jack is immediately debriefed from the staff where he can walk around and where he should avoid which sets off alarm bells for him.

It was also a current read with the COVID variant in heights. For the rich they seemed to have taken the opportunity to leave their homes and cities and come to this lodge as it offers them a safe heaven and still be outdoors.  Jack gets allocated to work with Allison who is a famous singer and the pair get on very well.  As they explore more of the grounds together they stumble across odd signs and barbed wires. They soon realise the lodge owners are holding back on something and the police aren't helping much. They both decide to investigate further which opens a loop hole of trouble.

I liked Jacks character, he was very reflective and contemplated a-lot.  I adored how Jack and Allison friendship bloomed, and it just felt right and easy. It was an interesting read as it held a few different endings that came together. The last few chapters are mind blowing, you do get something sinister is brewing and it rears its ugly head every now and again but the final is just next level.

I loved the descriptions and sentences of the outdoors and and around the lodge. It was wonderful to read and felt crisp.  I did get a bit lost with the fishing notions but the thriller aspect of this book won by miles for me. I would recommend this book.
