Blurb
In the small town of Crozon in Brittany, a library houses manuscripts that were rejected for publication: the faded dreams of aspiring writers. Visiting while on holiday, young editor Delphine Despero is thrilled to discover a novel so powerful that she feels compelled to bring it back to Paris to publish it.
The book is a sensation, prompting fevered interest in the identity of its author - apparently one Henri Pick, a now-deceased pizza chef from Crozon. Sceptics cry that the whole thing is a hoax: how could this man have written such a masterpiece?
An obstinate journalist, Jean-Michel Rouche, heads to Brittany to investigate.
My Thoughts
This is the first book in the series but I was really drawn to the blurb with a unqiue premise. It is also a french translated book..
It was a unique book to read with the premise being a library that created a little home of rejected manuscripts. When Delphine discovered a script from deceased Henri Pick who was the Pizzeria owner, she takes full action to make his story come to fruition by publishing and promoting it. I liked Delphines characters, as you follow her on her journey in the world of publishing and She has so many questions so goes on a quest to get what she wants. The story triumphs but all this success for the book it also leaves alot of people suspecting why it ended up on the rejected pile all them years ago and the mystery behind it.
Multiple different characters helped the development of the story and we learn about them as the story progresses. We meet Marianne who is Henri's wife and cannot believe he could write such a book. Henri was a quiet man who got on with life in a melancholy way. There is resentment from Marianne as she pushed unwillingly into the spotlight as everyone wants to know who Henri was. There is also Josephine who is their adult daughter, who has her own woes from a broken marriage. We also get to learn about Rouche, who was a critic and was once very much feared, he doesn't buy in to the novel and wants to unearth the 'truth' of who Henri was. One character I absolutely adored was Magali the shop owner.
In the journey of all this; relationships are effected, connections are made and lots of reflective thoughts are highlighted. I loved reading this book as it was very fast-paced but was enriched in lots of mystery and humour.
