Blurb
Set in Guatemala in the mid-Eighties, during a very turbulent historical period, Livingston Unfound is the journey of a woman, Monica, travelling on her own, taking risks and facing dangers, choosing friends and lovers across cultural boundaries, and, above all, struggling to come to terms with the inevitable contradictions that come with being an affluent foreigner in a land of poverty and repression.
The journey she sets out on forces her to acknowledge her privilege, while she aspires to see the world with new eyes.
As she strives to make close and intimate friends across class, race, and cultural differences, she is confronted by the conflicts that come with being a traveller far from home.
My thoughts
I was really intrigued by the blurb which drew me in.
We go on a journey with Monica, where she faces new challenges and gets to meet new people and see new places. Along the way she has a journey of self discovery.
I does slow down in sections but you feel the darkness and loneliness. You want Monica to part ways and be happy but the trauma and heavy heart leads her to still holding on. The story is spread over 2 years and there are themes of different cultures, people, travel and how our own perceptions of the world. It took forth imbalance of socio-economical locations and the frustrations it can lead for people.
I liked the writing style and descriptive use of language which helps you create an image. We meet lots of characters that are with full force with good and bad which I really liked.
I liked the set out of the book as each chapter is representing a story, a journal snippet, or a place but they all interlink wonderfully. Travelling is always an eye opener for both a beautiful journey and seeing how different people live.
