In 1935, six-year-old Emily Evans vanishes forever from her family’s summer house on a remote

Minnesota Lake.

Sixty years later, Lucy, Emily’s quiet and watchful older sister, lives alone in the lake house.

When Lucy dies, she leaves the house to her grandniece, Justine. The lake house offers Justine

an escape from her manipulative boyfriend and a chance to give her daughters the home she

never had.

But the discovery of a notebook, in which her great aunt has written the story of that devastating

summer, forces Justine to realise there may be more to her inheritance than she first imagined.

In a house haunted by the sorrows of the women who came before her, Justine must overcome

their tragic legacy if she hopes to save herself and her children.

My Thoughts

Well this was epic, so atmospheric and hard to put down.
It is rare for a book to get my hooked from page 1 but this did and you know it's going to be good when that happens.

I was worried it would be too fast, but it has a steady pace which allows the character, surroundings and plot to be fully explored and developed to a depth that it gives that right level of mystery and that haunting feeling.

The core of the story is about three sisters; Lucy, Lilith and Emily. Lucy one day in her old age sits down and starts to write about her family and the events that have take place. When she sadly passes the house is passed onto Justine. Justine thinks this is her perfect break and takes her daughters Angela and Melanie out of school to the house. As the three collected the keys from the neighbour they already had a sense of creepiness about it all but nonetheless a new chapter for Justine and her girls. Once Justine collects the notebooks from the library she unearths more than she bargained for.

I have to say this book is not only about the diary and what happened in the past but here is so much more to it in-regards to Justine and her escaping her abusive relationship, trying to manage life as a single mother, always worrying if her ex will find her and trying to settle and create a new life in Minnesota for her family. Even from the past to present it is about; motherhood, sisterhood and growing up and how dynamics can change.

A well rounded compelling narrative which I thoroughly enjoyed.
