Emily Wilde is good at many things: she is the foremost expert on the study of faeries; she is a genius scholar and a meticulous researcher who is writing the world's first encylopaedia of faerie lore. But Emily Wilde is not good at people.

So when she arrives in the hardscrabble village of Hrafnsvik, Emily has no intention of befriending the gruff townsfolk. Nor does she care to spend time with another new arrival: her dashing and insufferably handsome academic rival Wendell Bambleby.

But as Emily gets closer to uncovering the secrets of the Hidden Ones - the most elusive of all faeries - she also finds herself on the trail of another mystery: who is Wendell Bambleby, and what does he really want? To find the answer, she'll have to unlock the greatest mystery of all - her own heart.

My Thoughts

The cover of this book entices you in straight away and you know you're going to be for a treat and escapism.

This book added a twist to what seemed to be a historical/fantasy read but with added touch of modern feel without being too far out of reach. The whimsical, fairy tale, grimm stories worlds all collided together which made it a very intriguing read.

I adored Emilys character development changed alongside the story, it resonated to how much she has learnt and adapted. Emily started off being introverted and self aware and wanting to grasp out further and by studying the faeries it delivers her a surprise on how she can relate to other people.

What was interesting was the structure of the book in journal form and I feel it worked really well. So well written that allowed for the quirkiness of the characters shine through. Not all faeries were described as cute and tinker-bell like, which is what I initially imagined. The descriptions  in the book set the perfect dialogue and imagery without being fluffy and overdone.

Another surprising element is there will be another book and I am super excited to read that follow the series.
