When his grandfather dies, secrets are revealed, and everything Nik thinks he knows about his father is turned on its head. Nik makes it his mission to discover the truth about his father and the circumstances of his death, uncovering painful truths in the process.

Nik yearns to know more about his father, who died before he was born. His mother, Avani, held hostage by her guilt surrounding his death, refuses to share any information with her son. Nik is forced to create a fragmented image of his father, pulled together from hushed whispers at family gatherings and photos stolen from his mother’s bedroom.

My Thoughts

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the it was written in such a way that the moments were perfectly captured.

I really enjoyed the past and present tense and getting to learn more about Avani in her younger years and her relationship with her family growing up. And now going through the motions with the loss of her father and her relationship with her son. It was also touching to read about the relationship between Nik and his grandfather.

Each person was brought to life and had good and annoying characteristics about them but the character development was well done that we get to know them on a personal level and follow them on their own personal journeys, through rumination and determination.

The book evoked emotions of love, hope and how complex relationships can get through regrets of the past and grief. Also highlighting prejudice, cultural challenges and racism that they have to face.

My favourite quotes from the book:

"They sat in the autumn sunshine, sipping sweet chai....there was something comforting about being outside of the flurry" This was like wonderful to read, as having a warm drink and people watching is favourite thing to do

"This is Something she has always struggled with- trying to summon words when she feels overwhelmed" This resonated so much with me and will stick with me!
