Blurb

Zohaib, Misha and Nadia believed they would be in each other's lives forever. As children they played, argued, teased and loved one another. Yet nothing could have prepared them for the tragic turn of events one fateful afternoon in Karachi, Pakistan, when the divisions and differences between them are revealed. Years later and they are still trying to piece their lives back together, still trying to make sense of what happened. Zohaib is living in London, haunted by the ghosts of the past. Nadia has escaped the household where she first met Misha and Zohaib but finds fate delivering her back to their door... The Idle Stance of the Tippler Pigeon is a beautifully rendered portrait of love, healing, and long-buried pain, digging deep into the nature of trauma and class division.

My Thoughts

I was really excited to be approached to read this book ahead of the South Asian Heritage Month.

This is a short read of 240pages so I got through it fairly quickly. Although short is does cover some intense topics such as; domestic abuse, harassment, racism, poverty and child loss. Childhood trauma plays a huge in the story telling and it weaves from past to present. But illustrates how the past and the revelations and challenges the characters had to go through steep within them to the present day.

You don't actually get to find out what the core of the trauma is until the very end, but from the narration you ebb and flow through the sadness and complex life issues they are all facing.

What I thought the author did exceptionally well is really highlight and crafted the emotional aspect of those adults now, who as children needed a safe space, needed security and protection of adults, supportive surroundings had to go through stages many moments of their lives without the closure and acceptance that they needed and craved. The lack of closure was significant as it was like a dangling carrot of a constant reminder of what has happened and should have happened.

It was really well written and a beautiful story with some complex and emotive characters. The author did a fab job and I cannot wait to read what the author and publishing team deliver next.
