Blurb

Mimi Kwa ignored the letter for days. When she finally opened it, the news was so shocking her hair turned grey. Why would a father sue his own daughter?

The collision was over the estate of Mimi's beloved Aunt Theresa, but its seed had been sown long ago. In an attempt to understand how it had come to this, Mimi unspools her rich family history in House of Kwa.

One of a wealthy silk merchant's 32 children, Mimi's father, Francis, was just a little boy when the Kwa family became caught up in the brutal and devastating Japanese occupation of Hong Kong during World War II. Years later, he was sent to study in Australia by his now independent and successful older sister Theresa. There he met and married Mimi's mother, a nineteen-year-old with an undiagnosed, chronic mental illness. Soon after, 'tiger' Mimi arrived, and her struggle with the past - and the dragon - began ...

My Thoughts

I generally do not read Memoir style books but this was just so wonderfully written that you are engrossed into it.

This was a fascinating read from family dysfunction, narcissistic members but also safety and comfort of some parts of the family. But albiet a chaotic surrounding with some traumatic moments.

It was interesting to read how past trauma especially from childhood to adulthood and how this affects future vents. Forgiveness played a big part but integrally not forgetting the events and becoming resilient. But also people close to Mini such as her Aunt Theresa who was fundamental to her life and kept her grounded but also showed her love.

We gain insight in to the  Chinese culture as well which was important to add and give the readers more understanding.

There are a few jumps from past to present and not always too obvious or with warning so can feel a bit glitchy when reading but overall it does not effect the book too much.

The cover is just beautiful and I am glad I gave this book a chance as it was worth it.
