Blurb
Laura, a Bosnian war survivor and Cambridge University librarian, has long tried to forget the horrors of her past. But when she and her husband Adam move to Serbia, disturbing memories start to emerge. Adam’s work as a British diplomat takes him on a mission to capture war criminal General Ratko Mladić, leaving Laura isolated in the very country that invaded her own.
As the spirits of those murdered in the conflict resurface, Laura finds herself running a guest house for ghosts. They cook, laugh, drink, play cards and share folktales of Bosnian water spirits, reminding Laura of the home she once lost. But when they develop a vengeful interest in the manhunt for Mladić, Laura must decide: are her guests a sign that she is unravelling, or can they help her confront the past she has fled for so long?
My Thoughts
This book will stick with me for a while.
There was soo much going into this plot, the war / conflict and the trauma that lives on not only from them moments but afterwards trying to collect the pieces back together. Although there is storytelling about the war, the book does not provide too much historical details.
Laura's character was engaging, she has been through so much tragedy and the past has shaped who she is in the present. Laura also suffers from family loss and she now has to navigate new chapters on her life within all the sadness and find moments to hold on to.
This book touches on so much, love, loss, war, mental health, belonging, PTSD and family. There was a-lot of emotion within this book and characters narrative. I did enjoy that it did have some light hearted moments to help soften the book.
I really enjoyed this book and would recommend.
