Her husband vanishes. The answers lie in 1940s London, where secrets surface and the truth comes at a devastating cost.
Essie is consumed by fear. Far from their Caribbean island, her husband has disappeared, leaving her alone and adrift. As her worry grows, their dreams of a shared future slip further away. Determined to uncover the truth the young bride travels to post-WWII London, armed with only a single clue.
In the city’s shadowed streets Essie uncovers betrayals that shake her to the core. The man who promised her forever has buried secrets that threaten everything she believed about love, trust, and herself.
Will this search lead Essie to the man she loves, or are her dreams about to be shattered?
This is Book 1 in the Hope series, and I’m already looking forward to seeing what happens next.
We meet Essie and follow her on a personal journey of self-discovery. She begins as a somewhat naïve character, and you can’t help but hope she’ll find her voice and start thinking ahead. As the story develops, Essie grows more resilient and determined, bringing a sense of hope and strength to the new chapters of her life.
We also hear from LeJeune, who marries Essie but leaves her the day after their wedding, promising to send for her in London. As time passes and Essie hears nothing from him, she begins to question who she really married. Through his perspective, we learn more about LeJeune’s struggles — facing prejudice, rejection, and the consequences of his choices.
I really appreciated the depth of character development. The author takes time to capture the emotions, struggles, and connections between the characters, making them feel real, complex, and at times heartbreaking. You find yourself empathizing with some characters and rooting for them to find peace and happiness.
The story’s backdrop — moving between the Dominican Republic and wartime and postwar London — adds richness and historical depth.
Overall, this was a fascinating historical read that explored life, love, and hidden secrets in a compelling way. I’d definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys historical fiction with emotional depth and strong character arcs.

Thank you so much for being a part of this adventure x 💚💙
