One Dark Night- Blog Tour
A party at sunset. A body at sunrise. What happened that night in the woods?
When the body of a young woman is discovered in the woods the morning after Halloween, arranged with ritualistic precision, teenager Ellie has more reason than most to be afraid …
As both Ellie’s mum and the local school counsellor, Rachel, must grapple with the terror gripping the community, a tough job that’s made even harder when she realises her daughter is keeping secrets …
Police detective Ben Chase is desperate to solve the murder, but with his daughter Ellie struggling and the noose circling ever tighter, can he catch the killer before they strike again?
The blurb definitely pulled me in, and I’m glad to say I wasn’t disappointed.
The story is told through multiple POVs, which works really well in building tension as the plot slowly begins to unfold. Each perspective adds another layer to the mystery, allowing the reader to see different sides of the same events. The author does a great job creating a wide range of personalities, giving real insight into who these characters are and why they make the decisions they do. As the story progresses, you begin to understand their motivations, flaws, and the secrets they’re carrying.
The setting plays a big part in the atmosphere of the book. With autumn Halloween approaching, and set in the woods, it creates a naturally eerie and unsettling tone. The author captures that dark, atmospheric feeling perfectly, making the setting feel almost like another character within the story.
What I appreciated most was how the plot moves beyond being just a typical whodunnit. While the mystery element is definitely there, the story also dives deeper into themes such as social media, bullying, and gaslighting. It explores how quickly narratives can be manipulated online and how damaging that can be for the people involved. The ripple effects of these themes ended up being far greater than I initially expected, and it really makes you stop and think about the impact of media, public perception, and mental health.
There is also a strong element of survival throughout the story, particularly when it comes to trauma and the weight of long-held secrets. Some of the characters are dealing with things that have shaped them in profound ways, and watching those layers slowly unravel added emotional depth to the narrative.
Overall, this was an eerie, dark, and atmospheric read that kept me engaged as the mystery slowly revealed itself. If you enjoy books that combine suspense with deeper themes about human behaviour and secrets, this is definitely one worth picking up.
