What if everything you ever wished for turned out to be the loneliest place of all?

Helena Beale is desperately lonely. Still grieving her parents, stuck in the city, and watching everyone around her move on with their lives, she begins to fear that love has passed her by.

So when a psychic predicts a dazzling future – a devoted man, a beautiful home, and a child to call her own – Helena clings to the vision like a lifeline.

And then, impossibly, it comes true. Helena finds herself in the countryside with a charismatic partner, a little boy she adores, and the picture-perfect life she was promised. From the outside, she has everything she ever wanted. But inside the relationship, something is very wrong…

As cracks begin to show, Helena must confront a devastating truth: getting what you wished for isn’t the same as being truly loved. Can she gather enough courage to break free, and choose herself when everything is telling her not to? This emotional romance is perfect for readers of Beth Moran, Paige Toon, Dani Atkins and Laura Pearson.

My Thoughts

This was my first read from this author, and I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for what they release next.

This book really took me by surprise. It carries a lot of emotional weight and explores some difficult and thought-provoking themes. While it does touch on domestic abuse and control—particularly in the earlier part of the story—it also goes much deeper, exploring loneliness, personal growth, self-worth, and the journey towards regaining strength.

We follow Helena on a powerful and emotional journey as she navigates some incredibly intense moments. At times, it feels like she simply can’t catch a break, which makes her story all the more affecting. The way her situation unfolds is subtle at first, but that slow, almost quiet build is what makes the emotional impact hit so much harder. There’s no dramatic turning point early on—instead, the tension gradually creeps in until you fully feel the weight of everything she’s experiencing. That sense of unease lingers throughout, and I found myself really feeling that pressure alongside her.

What stood out most was how thoughtfully the story handles such sensitive subject matter. It would have been easy to sensationalise these themes, but instead the author takes a grounded and emotional approach. The focus remains on Helena’s internal world—her confusion, her attempts to make sense of things, the hope she clings to, and ultimately the strength she begins to rediscover. It feels authentic, and at times both heartbreaking and empowering to read.
Watching Helena begin to question her reality is one of the most compelling aspects of the novel. Her shift from self-doubt to awareness is handled with care and nuance, and her gradual rediscovery of self-worth feels realistic and earned rather than rushed. From the outside, everything appears stable and even enviable, but underneath lies something far more complex. It’s a powerful reminder of how easy it is to mistake appearances for happiness, and how important it is to feel genuinely safe, valued, and seen.

I also appreciated how the story explores love beyond just romance—highlighting the importance of connection in the small, everyday moments, and the comfort found in the people around us. Those quieter acts of care and kindness add another layer of warmth to the narrative.

By the end, I was completely invested in Helena’s journey. It’s an emotional and reflective read that builds its impact through honesty rather than shock. There’s something deeply reassuring at its core—that no matter what life throws your way, and no matter how many twists and turns you face, you can still find your way back to where you truly belong.

A quietly powerful story that stays with you long after you’ve turned the final page.
