If you could be anyone – who would you be?

Beth Greenwood has always imagined being someone else. Someone more successful, more exciting. More alive. What would it really be like to walk in another person’s shoes – just for a day?

And then she gets the chance to do it, with the help of the Players Club. A secret group of women who have made it their mission to let one another live their dreams. Tell them who you want to try, and they will make it happen. Circus acrobat, traffic controller, woman-who-shops-in-Chanel: no identity is out of reach. Being alive has never been so much fun.

That is, until the stakes of Beth’s own life become dangerously high, and the line between self-invention and self-delusion begins to blur. Torn between her new friends and her real responsibilities, Beth has to ask herself: when it matters most, who does she really want to be?

My Thoughts

We go on a journey with Beth and her sister Elspeth. The blurb gives us a good insight of the chaos that is about to unfold.

The story follows Beth Greenwood, whose seemingly ordinary life is transformed when she discovers the world of life-playing—a hobby that allows participants to step into entirely different identities and live out lives beyond their own.

At the same time, her sister Elspeth's life is beginning to unravel. From Beth's perspective, Elspeth has always had everything together, but beneath the surface cracks are starting to show. As the sisters navigate their own personal struggles, the novel explores identity, self-discovery, and the often-hidden realities behind seemingly perfect lives.

What impressed me most was the way Mills crafted a story that constantly kept me guessing. Just when I thought I had worked things out, another surprise would shift my perspective and pull me deeper into the narrative. The pacing made it difficult to put down, with each chapter revealing new layers that demanded to be uncovered.

Beyond the plot, the novel shines through its emotional authenticity. The characters feel genuine and relatable, navigating insecurities, hopes, and disappointments in ways that ring true to real life. Also are unhinged at the best of times. Their journeys encourage reflection on self-acceptance and the importance of embracing both our strengths and flaws, rather than measuring ourselves against unrealistic expectations.

At its heart, this is a story about connection. It celebrates the people who stand beside us through life's highs and lows and reminds us that meaningful relationships are often the foundation of true happiness.

The premise requires readers to embrace a certain level of imagination, However, once you accept its central concept, the story becomes an engaging exploration of identity, possibility, and the paths we choose to follow. This is a novel that asks intriguing questions about who we might become if given the chance to start over, reinvent ourselves, or live out the lives we've only ever imagined. Filled with complex female characters and moments of genuine introspection, it offers far more than its unique premise might suggest.

If  enjoy character-driven stories, journeys of self-discovery, and thought-provoking then this book is for you.
