Blurb

A truth universally acknowledged: enemies attract!

Grad student Elle Bradshaw is on the cusp of completing her literature PhD. And while life beyond college is terrifying, spending her evening fixing a database malfunction with gorgeous yet grumpy tech geek Fisher Davis is worse. He infuriates her while making her heart race—it’s a distraction she doesn’t need!

When a fluke geomagnetic storm leaves them trapped together during a blackout, the fiery kiss that follows is unexpected—and explosive. But catastrophically, the storm also wiped Jane Austen from existence! Now, Elle’s the only person to remember Pride and Prejudice and, it seems, romance itself.

As Elle navigates a world so familiar, yet not her own, she realizes she might just need to put her pride to one side and ask Fisher for help. Could the guy who was once her enemy turn out to be her very own Mr. Darcy . . . ?

My Thoughts

As soon as i read the blurb I just knew I had to read this book.

Elle is a literature PhD student who has somehow managed to turn a four-year degree into a five-year ordeal, leaving her questioning what on earth she is going to do with her life once it finally comes to an end.  Elle is such an easy character to root for. Her passion for books feels genuine, and her determination to uncover what has happened to Jane Austen and put things right gives the story plenty of heart.

Then there’s Fisher — charming, grumpy, frustrating and definitely not the person Elle would choose to be stuck with when the power goes out. Unfortunately for her, that is exactly what happens. Fisher brings a completely different energy to the story, and although he can be difficult at times, there are moments that reveal a much softer side to him.

The relationship between Elle and Fisher was one of my favourite parts of the story.  Together, they made a really enjoyable pair, and I loved seeing how their unexpected circumstances brought them closer. A geomagnetic storm leaves them stranded together, things take an unexpected romantic turn, and they share a kiss neither of them is likely to forget. Their personalities couldn’t be more different, which made their interactions both amusing and unpredictable. What starts off with plenty of frustration and awkwardness gradually develops into something much more meaningful, and I really enjoyed seeing their relationship evolve.

But the real shock comes when the lights return and they discover that something much bigger has changed: Jane Austen no longer exists.

What follows is such a clever and entertaining concept, blending romance, literature, mystery and a touch of the unexpected. I loved the idea of a world where one of the most influential writers in history has simply disappeared, and watching Elle try to make sense of it all made for a really fun read.

One of the things that really stood out to me was the love of literature running through the whole story. There’s something lovely about seeing how much meaning books can hold and how certain stories can stay with us long after we’ve finished reading them.

I also really enjoyed the way Jane Austen was incorporated into the plot. There were plenty of clever little nods for Austen fans, but it never felt as though the book was simply trying to recreate Pride and Prejudice.

Overall, this was such an imaginative and entertaining story, with a lovely mix of romance, humour and literary magic. It completely drew me in, and I found myself wanting to keep reading just to see where the story would take me next.
