Matilda Windsor is Coming Home- Blog Tour
My Thoughts
It was an emotional rollercoaster of a read.
What I really liked was the author took a different turn with this book in the sense that when reading about mental health we only ever read about depression and darkness but what Anne created in Matty was the opposite of what we see; following her trauma and to protect herself Matty's mind and body created a safe heaven for herself.
At the start we meet Matty and she doesn't believe that she is a patient at Ghyllside Psychiatric Hospital but rather she is residing in a luxurious estate where she is an heiress the nursing staff are all her servants and the other residents are her houseguests. We soon learn that Matty has been wrongfully incarcerated for the past 50 years and her brother Henry is longing for her return. Matty was caring for Henry when their mother passed away and not having any real understanding he also hopes she is somewhere safe and living an amazing life. You could really sense the sibling bond and it was heartbreaking to read.
As I delved further into the book I learnt about saddening details and journey of Matty who is actually Matilda then Tilly and now Matty. How can one person endure so much pain and you begin to see why her mind is protecting her.
It was interesting to read between what the nursing staff feel and Matty does and sometimes one side prevails more. Janice the social worker, really wants to help Matty and get her safely home to Henry but is it as straight forward as that and how will Matty cope with being back in society and with Henry whom she hasn't seen for a long time.
I really liked how well rounded the book become as we read through 3 perspectives and each narrative gave a unique element to the book. It also showed how some stigmas around mental health haven't changed much in all this time.
