After the death of his grandfather, Noah’s life is thrown into chaos as he faces a repressed past which threatens everything he believes to be true.

In the course of trying to come to terms with his loss, Noah must also navigate a difficult relationship with his sister, Kelly, as they reflect on their turbulent childhood – when they were taken from London to live in the Kent countryside following the breakdown of their parents’ marriage.

Set between the 1970s and the more recent past, Adventures About To Begin chronicles a collapsing marriage as experienced by its children and reflects on how memory shapes our decisions at crucial junctures during our lives.

It is both funny and touching, as well as a sensitive insight into British family life during a period of great social and cultural change.

My Thoughts

Well can we just appreciate the book cover to start with. I really liked it. The appendix at the back of the back was a good surprise and which more books would add this element

We switch between 2 timelines, the 1970's with Noah, Kelly and Daniel (the other sibling) and 2005, which I really did enjoy as it gave more life to the story both past and present were able to explored and their voices shone through.

The family move in with their grandfather and then after with Marjorie. Also joining them in the house is Marjories' foster children and also a cousin.

This is when the adventure begins. In turn this meant alot of time being unsupervised and unguided especially during the times they needed to be. Cleverly done the conversations are left incomplete which then makes you question in the present what happened and what was said for the consequences of the present.

Noah and Kelly are so different but their past strings them together Even as siblings you can go through the same events and they effect you very differently. But also what happened in the relationship with Daniel.

Overall a good family drama and engaging read.
