The Davidsons seem like a normal family. But they do have one little secret…

American student Alice Snyder was excited to be spending the summer in Scotland, working as an au pair for the Davidson family at their remote lodge. But one month after she arrived, Alice disappeared without trace. Now the new au pair, Melanie, has arrived - and soon notices that the Davidsons are a bit odd.

There’s the strange comings and goings at night, the creepy paying guests, and sinister uncle Gray who makes her flesh crawl. And then there’s the worrying scratch marks on the floor of the au pair’s bedroom.

Did Alice try to barricade herself in? What could she have been so afraid of? Are the Davidsons somehow linked to her disappearance? And is Melanie herself now in danger? As she desperately tries to find out what happened to Alice, Melanie begins to understand that this old house harbours a truly horrifying secret.

Alice was its last victim, but she might be its next…

My Thoughts

This book had me hooked. So much suspense that keeps you gripped!

Split POV told by Alice and Melanie and each chapter tells you the date of what that chapter includes which was a good way to keep track  when there is more than one POV.

The characters in this book were complex and more sinister than I anticipated.

Alice's character was sweet as she left her life behind abruptly in the USA to prove to her parents she is responsible and can take care of herself. As she settles into her new job , lifestyle and home, things start to become more unsettling and before we know it Alice disappears.

Melanie is a different character and starts to delve further into where has Alice gone and why and starts her investigations.

The Davidsons include Cato, Ken, their 3 children and Uncle Gray. Once we get to know more details about them, the more unsettle the plot becomes.  We also get to meet Alice's parents and boyfriend.

The backdrop of Scotland added a perfect element to the book.

A very cleverly written book which I do recommend!
