How far must you run to truly escape your past?

Annie thinks she has found the answer when she leaves her home on the west coast of Ireland and boards a ship for New York. Irish maids are in demand in the 1920s, and she finds work with the wealthy Cavendish family in their opulent Fifth Avenue mansion.

Annie soon makes a friend too, an Italian waitress named Elena. As their friendship deepens into something more passionate and dangerous for them both, however, Annie's past rises up to haunt her. Once again she will be forced to flee.

A century later, in post-pandemic Ireland, Emer is also running, and finds a haven in her family's home in West Kerry. But here, too, the past is refusing to die, and as Annie and Emer's lives intertwine, long buried secrets are about to be revealed.

My Thoughts

I was really intrigued by this book and the cover and I am glad that I did read it.

It set in dual time from 1920's to the present in 2022. It was interesting to read the similarities and difference between both time lines when it came to decision making. We get POV from Annie and Emer. Although many years apart they both shared this bond and their stories connected together.

Annies character leaves behind her life in Kerry to discover more opportunities in America. She leaves behind her family but her mother does give her say so to when can leave as times where difference then. Annie also has to leave her friends behind as she sets off to make a new life. She does make other friends such as May and Annie. But when Annie and Elena connect and what starts off as friendship develops much deeper but Elena is already "promised' to another man. They both navigate this challenging time as they figure out what they feel about each other and what the outcome of their decisions will be.

Emers character Who also lives in Kerry leaves LA as she struggles with burn out and self identity. As she heads home she challenges her to be more active whereby she meets Rob who is a surf instructor and other locals. As they explore more there is a connection that is made back to Annie.

Friendships, relationships and new challenges make this an enjoyable read.
