This was one dark, twisty psychological thriller that I thoroughly enjoyed reading from start to finish. The story immediately pulls you in with its unsettling atmosphere and keeps you guessing throughout. It is the kind of book where you constantly question who can really be trusted, and every chapter seems to reveal another layer to the mystery.
We follow Raegan, who leaves her hometown as soon as she can in order to start a completely new life. After enduring years of bullying, teasing, and painful memories, she decides the only way to truly move forward is to reinvent herself, even going as far as changing her name. I really liked this aspect of the story because it showed just how deeply her past affected her and how desperate she was to escape it.
However, her attempt at a fresh start is cut short when she is compelled to return home following the disappearance of her friend Mia. What initially seems like a single missing person case soon develops into something much darker and far more complex. As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that Mia’s disappearance is connected to other women who have gone missing over time, adding an even more chilling edge to the plot. This definitely is not a straightforward mystery, and the author does a great job of slowly uncovering secrets while maintaining suspense.
We are also introduced to several other characters whose lives are deeply tied to the town and its dark history. In particular, Jaymes stood out as an interesting character. As Mia’s high school boyfriend, he already has a personal connection to the case, but the fact that his own sister also disappeared adds another emotional layer to his storyline. I enjoyed the complicated relationships between the characters, especially as hidden feelings and long-buried emotions begin to surface. Nothing is quite as simple as it first appears, and the shifting dynamics between the characters made the story even more engaging.
The atmosphere and tension throughout the novel remained sharp, eerie, and intense. There is always a sense that something bad is about to happen, which kept me completely invested in the story. The pacing worked really well for me because there was always something new being revealed, whether it was another clue, a shocking secret, or an unexpected development. There is a lot going on within the plot, but it never felt overwhelming. Instead, it added to the suspense and made me want to keep reading to uncover the truth.
I also really appreciated the emotional side of the story, particularly the bond between Reagan and Mia. Their friendship added warmth and depth to an otherwise dark and unsettling thriller, and it gave the mystery a stronger emotional impact.
The plot itself has a really strong premise and is very character-driven, which I always enjoy in psychological thrillers. The twists towards the end were unexpected and satisfying, and the conclusion tied everything together well. Overall, this was an engaging, suspenseful, and emotionally layered thriller that kept me hooked the entire way through. I would definitely recommend it to readers who enjoy dark psychological mysteries filled with tension, secrets, and surprising twists.
