We are introduced to Petra, a literary agent from London whose life is turned upside down after an ill-timed social media post goes wrong. In need of a change of scenery, she retreats to the small seaside town of Portneath, where she agrees to look after a little bookshop for six months while things settle down.
Then there’s Ross McCloud, an award-winning author whose hugely successful debut novel was published five years earlier. Despite the success of his first book, there has been no follow-up — not even a completed manuscript — and Ross is understandably reluctant to discuss what happened. Like Petra, he has chosen Portneath as a place to escape the pressures of his usual life and enjoy a little anonymity.
With both Petra and Ross seeking a fresh start in the same quiet seaside town, their paths are inevitably destined to cross.
With romance so prominent in the title, I went into the book expecting the relationship between Petra and Ross to be at the centre of the story. While the romance wasn’t the main focus, I would have enjoyed seeing more time devoted to the development of Petra and Ross’s relationship. Their journey from somewhat awkward encounters to dating and declaring their love happens quite quickly, so I found myself wishing for a little more buildup and opportunity to see their connection grow.
I really enjoyed seeing how Petra and Ross supported each other throughout the story. They both experience meaningful personal growth, and it was lovely to watch them gradually gain confidence, overcome their challenges and help each other move forward.
I enjoyed this read.
