What if everyone in your family was given a DNA test at Christmas: would there be any surprise results? For two women the answers are shocking, and dangerous. Perfect for readers of Liane Moriarty and Sally Hepworth.

Families lie. DNA doesn't.

Isobel Ashworth breezes through life, blissfully accustomed to the privilege which comes with her family name. But that changes when she arrives in the exclusive town of Hartwell. Sent there by her father to complete a controversial property development - and prove herself a serious player in the succession plan - her perfect life is unravelling. Isobel's fiance is telling lies, the project is a disaster and the locals hate her; could her father be setting her up to fail?

Buzzing with the promise of a big story, journalist Meg Hunter arrives in Hartwell to expose the Ashworth family dealings, and transform her faltering career. As she follows the trail of corruption, she uncovers clues about her mother's mysterious past.

When the next-gen Ashworths each receive an anonymous Christmas gift of a DNA testing kit, Isobel questions everything she knows about her family. Isobel is drawn to Meg and her pursuit of the truth ... but someone out there will stop at nothing to hide the secrets of both families.

My Thoughts

What if the people you have trusted your entire life turned out to be the very people you know the least about?

Kate Horan’s The Inheritance brings together two women whose lives seem worlds apart. Isobel Ashworth has grown up surrounded by money and opportunity, but being born into a powerful family doesn't mean she has the control she thinks she does. Meanwhile, journalist Meg Hunter is searching for answers about her own family history when a story in a small Australian town begins to take on a much more personal meaning.

Then an unexpected DNA test sets things in motion, bringing questions of identity, loyalty and family history into the spotlight.

I found the premise particularly interesting because it takes something many people would consider a bit of fun or simple curiosity and turns it into a source of uncertainty. How well can you really know your family? And if the truth threatens to change everything, would you still want to uncover it?

There is plenty happening beneath the surface, from the privileges that come with wealth to the lengths people may go to protect their reputations. The contrast between Meg and Isobel also adds an interesting dimension, as their separate journeys gradually become connected.

Although the story takes time to lay its foundations, the family connections and unanswered questions give readers plenty to piece together along the way. It also offers plenty to discuss about inherited privilege, family loyalty and whether blood ties necessarily define who we are.

For fans of family mysteries with a thread of suspense, complicated relationships and secrets waiting to be uncovered, this is one to consider.

Because sometimes, the biggest revelations aren't about what a family owns, but what it has spent years keeping hidden.
